Rain is always bad for protests. Particularly in a drought-stricken region like northern Italy, where the slightest hint of thunder sends people running indoors.
Political circumstances being what they are, however, judging from the number of demonstrators that turned out, the Torinese decided to stay the course.
Imagine the first May Day under Giorgia Meloni, and no one showed up. Few leftists in a city like Torino would be able to live with themselves.
It wasn’t the biggest May Day I’d seen here, but it was enough. Particularly given the sharp placards and hilarious costumes protestors fashioned for the event.
