The Battleground Needs You
Support Our Independent Journalism

By Natalie Sarkic-Todd
What a way to start the year. It’s only January, and we’re battling to hold on to the rules-based international order.
In a world where might increasingly means right, independent journalism is needed now, more than ever, to hold the powerful to account.
Today’s political climate is particularly pertinent to journalists because of its emphasis on narrative. Whoever lies the most wins, and it’s our responsibility to set the record straight.
The Battleground’s founding mission statement spells it out clearly. Seven years later, we’re one of the best-read progressive platforms in Europe. We were made for this moment.
Turmoil and polarisation - whether in Washington or Brussels - means citizens and lawmakers alike are struggling to understand a complex range of issues.
Because our remit is to provide analysis and perspective, not breaking news, The Battleground has hit a huge nerve. Our rapidly growing global audience bears this out.
Readers don’t just want details. They also want to know what political events mean. That’s what sets our work apart from the agency reporting that dominates news journalism.
However, The Battleground needs support. So we are asking readers to take out a paid subscription to our newsletter to underwrite the public service we provide.
With your help, we can do more to expose far-right parties fuelling conflict; identify resurgent fascism and nationalism; and review music, books, and film that illuminate the present.
Your contribution will sustain our team and coverage and allow The Battleground to promote democracy, diversity, and social justice in Europe and beyond.
We count on you and thank you for your support.
